Getting started
DevOps Navigator is a free, read-only dashboard for Azure DevOps that runs entirely in your browser. This guide walks you through the connection, from zero to browsing.
What you need
- An Azure DevOps Services organization (dev.azure.com).
- A personal access token (PAT) with read scopes - Work Items (Read), Project and Team (Read), and Code (Read).
- A modern browser. Nothing is installed.
1. Create a read-only personal access token
- Sign in to your Azure DevOps organization at https://dev.azure.com/your-org.
- Open User settings (the profile icon, top right) and choose Personal access tokens.
- Select New Token.
- Name it (for example “DevOps Navigator”), set an expiration (30 or 90 days is a sensible default), and under Scopes choose Custom defined.
- Select Read for Work Items, Project and Team, and Code.
- Create the token and copy it immediately - it is only shown once.
2. Connect in the dashboard
- Open the DevOps Navigator sign-in page.
- Enter your organization URL, for example
https://dev.azure.com/your-org. If you type just the organization name, it is expanded to the full URL for you. - Paste your personal access token.
- Choose whether to stay signed in on this device. Session storage (the default) clears your credentials when the browser session ends; “keep me signed in” persists them locally.
3. What happens next
The dashboard loads your projects, recent work items, activity, repositories and changesets directly from the Azure DevOps APIs. If your organization has no visible data, see the troubleshooting guide - the most common cause is a token without the right scopes.
